After I recorded my solo album, people kept asking me when I was going to play out. I never intended to play out as a "frontman". That is the reason I made video clips for "A Gift" & "Rocket to Reno".

Since there was no band to go on tour & promote the CD I thought that videos would be better than nothing. Anyway, after a few months of everybody asking me when I was going to grace the stages of NYC again, I started thinking about forming a band...

But if I were to form a new "rock combo" it had to be different than the previous ones. Not so much in musical direction ("Why try to fix it if it ain't broke...") but more in the way the band was going to be "functioning" and the kind of people that would be in it. You see, I don't like to practice much... I hate carrying my stuff around... You could say I'm lazy...I don't want to have to argue with band members about insignificant little details...Also, I don't like touring much, unless it's done right ($). Basically, I don't like to compromise about anything and I don't want to lose my precious time convincing some idiots that I'm right ! And of course,I'm always right !!!

As you can see ,if he wasn't careful, yours truly could have ended up in another frustrating "band" situation. But of course he knew better...

It was tricky ,I needed to find people like me: Good looking (important!), mature (I didn't say old...), lazy (just a bit...), jaded (...good), bitter (...even better) with a day job ( = $ , so we don't need to try to "get signed") and of course totally out of touch with the present musical scene. Oh yeah, they had to share some of my excellent musical tastes, too!!!

The hard thing was to find characters that would be dedicated enough to practice once in a while (not too much, please!) but smart enough not to try to convince me to go play a show 5 hours from home for a few bucks!!! This kind of required unconditional commitment is the reason why it is hard for me to join any band that is not mine. If you,my little cyber-friend, are not in a band I don't know if you can relate. But if you are, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, you might not agree with me but you probably have been in this kind of situation before: Some blockhead tells you ( I hope you weren't the one talking.. ): "What !!! You don't wanna play this out of town gig for free ? This is good for yor career, what do you want to do, play music or work for the rest of your life??"

Well, I'd like to play music but right now I need to pay my bills. To me, it doesn't really matter where the cash comes from as long as it keeps coming in. Which means : I'll play a show if I make some money or at least don't lose any. But I will not pay to play.

So I guess it means I'm not as romantic about the "rock thing" as I used to be...Oh well, that's too bad. I know all of this probably sounds logical to you (I sure hope so) but it doesn't seem to register with most people in the music business (musicians, managers, record company owners...), who always ask me to perform impossible tricks. Rats don't do tricks....

But I think I've been lucky. After a few awkward "auditions" it looks like I found the right individuals :

They might not be as good looking as I am (some might argue... ) but they sure are lazy! One of them might even be more bitter than me!! They all love the name SOUR JAZZ (hard to believe but I've met people who hated it !). They all have dogs (a sign of wealth, they can afford to feed them.) and they all drink colorful sissy drinks, just like me ! The drummer even listens to MAGMA, what else could I ask for ?

Since we don't have any pressure (no label, manager etc..) and we finance everything ourselves (even the webmaster doesn't get paid), the music we produce is of high quality ,at least we think so. Nobody tells us what to do. We are not trying to get "picked up" by any major labels,we don't even think they would be interested in a band like us. The mythical "KIDS" that every label is talking about would probably not like us: too old, too blatantly non-commercial and we don't bel ong to any musical genre, trend or scene .SOUR JAZZ doesn't "do it" for the kids, the chicks (did I mention we're all happily married ?) or money (we all have jobs). We "do it" for ourselves, just because we like it. No other reason. That is why our music is superior to most of the stuff out there. Of course if you like it, it's alright with us too !!!

But you might not hear it for a while since the only problem I can see is that we are a bit too lazy... We've been practicing for over 6 month now but we haven't even played out yet...We did record a 7 songs demo and now we're carefully planning our world domination plan. It'll happen soon, we have the technology (this web site) the weapons (old fashioned electric guitars) and a lot of ammo (songs with titles like "That's cool" and "It ain't cool").

It's rumored that there might be a SOUR JAZZ cd coming out soon... I can't wait ! Can you?
